Safeguarding Youth training is required for all Scouting America registered volunteers and is a joining requirement.  It must be completed PRIOR to submitting adult applications for processing.  Safeguarding Youth training must be taken EVERY YEAR. If a volunteer’s Safeguarding Youth training is not current at the time of annual registration renewal, the volunteer will not be re-registered.
Course Details:

Available in English and Spanish
Access it through my.scouting.org
Requirements: Complete all lessons + score 80% or higher on the final test
Annual Refresher:  After completing the full course once, a 15-minute refresher and retest is required each year to stay current.

Position Specific Training:  No Expiration
In 2015, after thoughtful discussion, the Executive Board of the Connecticut Yankee Council (CYC) adopted a policy requiring that all registered adults complete Position Specific Training for their registered position in order to remain registered with their respective Units. Required Position Specific Training will help the Adult Leaders of the Connecticut Yankee Council deliver better program experiences, build trust with parents and youth, and know how to prevent incidents.   Every Youth deserves a trained leader.
Position Specific Training Courses must be completed by all registered leaders at Connecticut Yankee Council. New Leaders and those changing positions must complete Position Specific Training Courses within 120 days of their registration or their position change. These courses do not expire.
All Registered Adults will be required to have Position Specific training for ALL positions they hold at Unit, District and Council levels. Trained Leader Requirements (October 2025)
All Position Specific Training Courses except Introduction to Leadership Skills (S11; IOLS) may be completed ONLINE at my.scouting.org.  Positions requiring Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills must complete IOLS within 180 days of registration or position change.

Hazardous Weather: Every Two Years
Hazardous Weather training is required for all Scouting America Direct-Contact leaders to be considered “trained” in their position.  This includes: Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster,  Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmaster, Den Leader and Assistant Den Leader, Crew Advisor and Associate Advisor, Explorer Advisor and Associate Advisor, Sea Scouting Adult Leader. Hazardous Weather training must be taken EVERY TWO YEAR. If a volunteer’s Hazardous Weather training is not current at the time of annual registration renewal, the volunteer will not be considered trained.

Youth Protection Every Year: The safety of the youth in our program is paramount, and we require that all adult leaders complete Youth Protection training on an annual basis. This online class can be taken at your own pace, and is required as part of your annual registration with Connecticut Yankee Council.

Position Training Before Registration: We believe strongly in providing the best adult leadership available, and require all adult volunteers to be trained in their Scouting position prior to registration with a unit, district or with the council. Almost all of this training can be done online, and within 1-2 hours, also at your own pace.

Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Outdoor Training within 6 Months of Registration: For Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, we only require completion of the online courses prior to registration, with the outdoor (Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills) portion allowed to follow within six (6) months.

AVOID Duplicate My.Scouting Accounts

If you can’t remember your log-in and/or password for my.scouting, please  call the Council registrar to assist.  DO NOT create another account.  Your previous training will no longer be  linked to you.

Your Training Records

Each Scouter’s official Training Record is maintained electronically in my.scouting.org, and this documents all training completed by the Leader. Leaders should contact their own Unit Leader (Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Skipper, or Crew Adviser) or Unit Committee Chair for any questions regarding Training Records.  District Training Chairs can also assist in correcting records.

It is strongly recommended that Scouters retain copies of all certificates of training (or “trained” cards), whether earned online or in person; it is also recommended that each Scouter periodically (at least annually) review his/her training record.

Your Unit’s Training Records

Each Unit Committee Chair is asked to take on the responsibility of making sure that the Leaders in their unit meet their Training Requirements. If your unit has a Unit Trainer, this responsibility can be assigned to them. When a leader in your Unit changes their Scouting Role, please remind them to take any additional training that may be needed.    Each year before re-charter, the Unit’s  Trained Leader and Safeguarding Youth reports should be reviewed in my.scouting.org  to check all training.  If you have any questions on how to do these tasks, reach out to your Unit Commissioner or District Training chair for assistance.
